1. Get Familiar with the EV’s Charging, Operating and Repairing Guidelines
Start-off on the right note by getting familiar with the dos and don’ts mentioned in the electric two-wheeler’s Manual in terms of charging, operating, repairs, etc. This will greatly help enhance the lifespan of your battery and your two-wheeler; and is sure to enhance performance too.

3. Avoid Deep Discharges
It’s important to note that lithium-ion batteries function better with partial discharge cycles, rather than with full discharges. Leaving the battery in a fully discharged state for extended periods, can lead to irreversible capacity loss.
Hence ideally recharge the battery when it reaches 20 to 30% capacity. Frequent draining below 20%, will adversely affect the battery life and performance.
4. Use the Recommended Charger
At all times ensure that you use the charger provided by the manufacturer, or a compatible one. Incompatible, unrecommended chargers can damage the battery and affect its performance and longevity.
5. Ideal Charging and Parking Conditions
The optimal temperature for charging your two-wheeler’s lithium-ion battery is 10°C - 30°C. Ideally charge the battery in moderate temperatures, since extreme heat or cold, can adversely affect your battery performance and lifespan.
Furthermore, when charging or parking your e-two-wheeler, ideally keep it in a shady spot in summers, and parked inside a garage in winters.
6. Briefly Cool your Battery Before Charging
Cooling down the battery before charging is yet another useful practice. Give your two-wheeler a few minutes rest after coming to a halt and then charge it. 7. Avoid Fast Charging

8. Don’t Overcharge the Battery
Regularly charging the battery up to 100%, or even recurrent overnight charging, may cause a minor reduction in the battery capacity, and reduce its lifespan and performance. This is more so in case of older e-two-wheelers, or batteries that do not have Battery Management Systems (BMS). Check the EV Manual to know whether it has the facility to slow down the charge rate as it nears 100%.
9. Long-Term Stowage at Partial Charge
It’s also important to check the manufacturer’s instructions related to storing your electric two-wheeler for an extended horizon. Generally, long-term storage should be at a 40 to 60% charge level. In any case, ensure that during prolonged storage, your battery is neither at full charge, nor at complete discharge.
10. Avoid Overloading
Be aware of the maximum load capacity recommended by the two-wheeler manufacturer. Exceeding the recommended load capacity can expose your battery to unnecessary stress which will reduce its life and performance.
11. Ongoing Maintenance
Regular maintenance definitely contributes to the longevity and performance of the battery. Ensure that the battery and its connectors are always clean and free from corrosion. Inspect the battery regularly for any signs of damage or swelling.
12. Update Software/Firmware
For e-two-wheelers equipped with BMS, ensure that the latest updates are incorporated, as they are geared to optimize battery performance and lifespan.
